The precipitated barium sulfate is white amorphous powder with relative density of 4.50 (15 °C) and melting point of 1 580 °C. Due to its high refractive index (1.63-1.65), it shows white color and has certain covering power. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, but soluble in hot sulfuric acid. It is easy to make mixed crystal with potassium permanganate, calcium carbonate or metal nitrate. It can be reduced to barium sulfide with carbon at high temperature. It is an important basic chemical raw material. Its main uses are as raw materials or fillers for paints, coatings, inks, plastics, rubber and batteries; surface coating agent for printing paper and copper paper; sizing agent for textile industry; clarifying agent for glass products, which can play the role of defoaming and increasing luster. It can also be used as a protective wall material for radiation protection, and also used in porcelain, enamel and dye industries, as well as raw materials for other barium salts.
